why 'except Daniel' rather than 'except Daniel and Mary Anne'?

Because your name is in the subject line as the person Mary Anne's inviting to her party. Since it's her party, it didn't occur to me to make an exception "allowing" her (in a tongue-in-cheek way) to attend her own party.
