re: ...ad infinitum

The system we choose is a reflection of our values, and rewards those we want to reward and punishes those we want to punish. A democratic republic, especially one whose basic mission is to "promote the general welfare", is obligated to work toward an economic system that benefits the maximum number of people, not a small elite.

That sure sounds swell. Unfortunately, our system seems to have political power of a small elite as its primary goal, not something that actually benefits the maximum number of people. This also seems to be the primary purpose of the tax code, which is used by politicians to reward and punish. The main reason we're never going to see a sales tax or flat tax is because the current system has too much appeal to those who use it for power.

As far as employment goes, I've seen liberal columnists and bloggers resort to everything but quantum physics to "prove" that the employment rate sucks. All I know is that for as long as I've been aware of it, the unemployment rate and number of payroll jobs have been the markers, and this is what people are going to be looking at. Good luck with the math.

The old saying isn't quite right.

Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for life. Give him a fish, and promise him one tomorrow, and you have him by the balls forever.
