Current Events » in reply to I will bet you that more people die of measles than bird flu in '06.

I hope you are right

Not that I wish people to die of measles, but I know it is a significant cause of death.

But if bird flu makes the jump in the next few months, it will be no contest. When is the big question.

If you made the bet over the next three years, I'd take it with 5 to 1 odds.

The war on measles is going better than the war on terror.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) today announced that countries are on target to halve deaths from measles, a leading vaccine-preventable killer, by the end of the year. Global measles deaths have plummeted by 39%, from 873 000 in 1999 to an estimated 530 000 in 2003.

But still, half a million preventable deaths...

A fraction of the money being spent in Iraq could eradicate measles in short order, but I guess none of those kids would vote for Bush or provide opportunities for Halliburton.
