While the government creates a lot of crap, good managers isolate people from the crap- I worked for GOOD managers... I honestly loved my job at Sandia. I did have to sit through MANY lectures on sexual harrassment and safety- when I worked at Brookhaven National lab I got someone lecturing us on cryogen safety to admit that it is best to handle cryogens in the nude... That was 2 wasted hours I wont get back....
The practice has not been adopted...
I think it is the same at NASA, Good managers isolate their people from the BS. The management of the mars Rover's team should be studied and emulated.
I have also seen good managers meltdown, if you try to manage by threats and fear then you fail immediately- I saw it happen, and I knew - as it was happening- that the manager was killing the project... (He was a GREAT manager, but he made the mistake of threatening his people- you do NOT threaten people that are working on a project because they believe in it)
I applied for this job shortly after the Manager's meltdown even though he made it clear the threats were not made against me.
:) so in short, say what you want about government activities, they still perform ... The project I left will be responsible for your 10 GHz processor in a few years
