Atheists don't try to substantiate superstition.

On the other hand, if there is a scientific theory, there is always supporting evidence. The difference between atheists and theists is that when there is good evidence supporting a change in theory atheists acknowledge it, and the theory changes. Religious people have beliefs without evidence, they never ask for proof for their beliefs, and if someone comes along with a different belief they have no reason to agree with them. In fact, it is impossible to change their minds.

Evolution is a good example, where a scientific theory is supported by such a vast volume of evidence that most professional scientists only argue over minor details. But centuries after the theory was established, religious types are still trying to reconcile it with their belief in the supernatural. It is the fiction that reinforces their religious beliefs. They have more interest in fiction than fact. Just like Star Trek reinforces some people's interest in science. The same uneducated people simply lack the critical thinking skills to distinguish between fact and fiction. The appeal of this stuff is in the bare tangibility of the realism it presents, and the transition to religious belief is often rationalized in a very sneaky manner.
