I can't speak for everyone. Darwin was a man of his time, and he probably feared reprisals from religious fundamentalists, just as Galileo did. However, I have confidence that most modern scientists would say that the evidence supports evolutionary theory, while there is no evidence for the existence of God, or that He created the world in seven days. Bluntly stated, I think most scientists ARE atheists, and if asked they would reply frankly, that there is no God.
There is a limit to knowledge obviously, but to suggest that God exists beyond that limit is to prove the atheists understanding that theology is an argument in ignorance. I think that reams of evidence for evolution while a total lack of evidence for creationism is a strong argument that one is correct and the other isn't. To carry on pushing something that just isn't substantiated is kinda dumb. It's like trekkies pushing research into warp drive when the mathematical derivation for special relativity, which proves nothing can go faster than light, has been around for nearly 100 years.
The more educated the population is, the less we will tolerate religion. It's empty reasoning.

You're overemphasizing semantics
