I remember riding across the Smokey Mountains as a kid in a rear facing back seat in Dad's station wagon. I remember puking my guts out, too. I was perhaps 7 years old and was just getting over the flu, so putting me back there might not have been a very good idea. For a short trip across town, it probably wouldn't be a problem. Subaru made a mini-sport vehicle called the Brat that had two rear facing seats in the back. I don't know how many people ever rode back there.
Some military transport planes (e.g. C-5) have rear facing seats. The idea is that they're supposed to be safer in an accident. I hopped a ride across the Atlantic in a C-5 back in 1979 and enjoyed it. The seats were confortable enough and the price was right ($10). It sure was much more comfortable than the sideways paratrooper bench seats in the C-130 and C-141. The C-5 was much quieter inside, too.
