Did you ever read Omni magazine?
There were some really good fiction stories in it. I remember one about a group of scientists that unleashed a global plague in order to save the Earth. The story picks up after the fact and the scientists are on trial for crimes against humanity. Over a billion people are dead, and the scientists are claiming they did what they did not out of hatred, but for the benefit of the Earth and Mankind. I wish I could find that issue, it was from the mid to late 1980s.
