Back in the days when the Federal government didn't have nearly infinite power, presidents weren't elected to be gods. Didn't matter all that much if they had some failings, since there were many levels of government dealing with problems.
It's amusing, and a little frightening, to see how many people talk about presidents in exactly the same way, and for exactly the same reasons, that our ancestors used to talk about gods and evil spirits.
"Why doesn't the president DO something about gas prices/wages/oil shortages/crop failures/the wart on my ass?"
There are a surprising number of people--many of them proud agnostics--who are firmly convinced that if THEIR guy had been president for the past six years, 9/11 wouldn't have happened, New Orleans would have been saved from Katrina, there wouldn't have been a recession, or oil price problems, everyone in the world would love us, and that all the ills of the world would be no more. You don't talk about political leaders that way.
