I was merely relating my personal experiences as I subjectively reacted to them, I had no idea they would be subjected to such scrutiny for political correctness.
The university concept, as envisioned by its founders in medieval times,
is not a democracy, no school can be. It will also be populated by weird insular types with narrow, non-social goals. It was designed that way. It is the purpose of this institution to preserve and promote the knowledge of the species, not provide a trade school education for the convenience of the business community.
Whether I am right or wrong in this assessment is a subjective choice, and I don't expect everyone to accept my opinions uncritically. What I am reporting is my own personal experience. My university time was one of the most profound in my life, it changed the way I saw the world, and it taught me to observe and reason and deal with external reality by exposing me to what others throughout history have thought and believed, and what others though about it. I believe my teachers sincerely wanted me to undergo this experience and did their best to provide it for me; and my fellow students, also part of that environment, enriched that experience by sharing with me the way they reacted to it. I also learned some useful job skills, too. But that's not why I went there.
I never became a professional academic, I went into the "real world" and applied what I'd learned, not just at work, but in learning to deal with what life threw at me. All I can report is that I got an excellent education, and next to my health, it is the greatest personal asset I possess.
I've met and worked with the new generation of college graduates, THEY are the ones who are narrow and specialized and unintegrated personalities. They are totally unprepared for what life will throw at them, and I dread what these kids will go through once they hit middle age and no longer can rely on the confidence and vigor of youth to get them through it. But I've noticed that they're all really good at their jobs.
