A minor aside...The first time I saw West Side Story I was in high school, and my cousin and I took the bus to town as we did every Saturday to go watch the taping of CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING FROM FLORIDA with GORDON SOLEY, followed by a matinee afterwards.
We knew WSS had a lot of press, but we didn't have a clue as to what it was about, so as we watched the long introduction (abstract colored designs while the overture was played) the tension was really building up. Finally the film started, the first scene being a gritty urban alley with a squad of teen hoodlums, ready to rumble, marching purposefully toward the camera. My cousin and I looked at each other and said
"Awright! A gang fight movie"
Suddenly, the delinquents on the screen burst into an intricate dance number and my cousin and I, and several hundred other teenagers in the auditorium, simultaneously groaned.
