These are some favorites of mine of the top of my head, i.e. movies I can watch a lot and not get tired of them. Can't speak for cinematic excellence. Some might even fall into the category of secret vices
"Princess Bride" (screenplay, thank God, by Goldman)
"Apollo 13:" also shows scientists as heroes
"Buckaroo Banzai"
Almost anything by Miyazaki (SDAI once touted me as an anime expert. I most definitely am not, confining my interest to a very small group of such films)
Any western with John Wayne in it.
Any western with Jimmy Stewart in it, INCLUDING "Feivel Goes West." "Cheyenne Social Club" had Stewart and Fonda.
"Alien," and especially "Aliens." Kind of a shame they stopped making any sequels after that.
Most of the SF classics: "2001," "Forbidden Planet," "Day the Earth Stood Still," the original "The Thing," and many others. I consider the original "Star Wars" a classic, too. Sue me.
Others will probably come to me later.
