Epicycles. OK, so I'm in the BB with inflation camp but yes, it seems that every time observations show something that conflicts with std BB theory, the theorists rush out and 'patch' the theory so it still works. Viola! It's hard for us to see today if this is adding epicycles or the normal process of observations refining theory so it's a better model of reality.
