The other, painful underlying assumption in Newt's remark

Child sexual abuse is a gay thing. Certain segments of the Right have been pushing this so long that they appear now to believe it: that gay men would be outraged that someone would insist that child sexual abuse is wrong, and criminal, because gay men practice child sexual abuse in great numbers. This lie has to be put to rest.

I also heard Foley blame his problems on alcoholism this morning, while announcing he would go into rehab. Nice try. I know numerous alcoholics, some of whom are related to me. While depression, poor health, liver and other digestive ailments, reckless or careless behavior, and sometimes violence manifest as results of the addiction, child sexual abuse doesn't factor in as a major effect of alcoholism. Alcoholism will sometimes allow the perp to forget his inhibitions and act upon his predatory impulses, though. It still begs the question, who took the drink in the first place? This excuse doesn't work for DUI, even when no one is hurt; why should he think it will work for stalking children for sexual gratification?

Will Newt also observe that the Congressmen in the know didn't want to be accused of drunk-bashing?
