Yes it's true that the US history in Iran and Iraq must have stirred up a lot of hatred, and so there is that understandable political element too. But 9/11 and 7/7 in England are clearly about dangerous Muslim fundamentalism, and can't be reduced to being just about political oppression. I used to think probably similar to you - that the Muslim rhetoric was not the main thing, and that it was really all about reacting to oppression. However I quickly realized that people who are genuine and humane don't fight oppression with civilian terrorism. They fight it through mass movements and mass social revolutions, like in Rumania for instance. So, I think recent years have shown that the politics was only part of the story, and that the whole situation has clearly morphed into a violent and dangerous struggle for global religious domination.
