2001 A Space Odyssey question

I was just thinking about this, and decided to ask the HZ bunch what you think. The technology shown in the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey was clearly ahead of what was really available in 2001. Just when do you all think we could reach that level of space technology, assuming the economics and politics were not a factor. Personally I think the movie was 50 or 100 years ahead of reality.
