A few computers ago, I suspected my Powersupply was dead. So I ordered a new one online. After plugging it in the computer was still dead, so I shelved the new power supply and tossed the computer since it wasn't worth plugging more money into. Then this last August, my computer died. Again I suspected the power supply, lucjky me I had a spare one of those. Unlukily it was still dead. Since this was a computer that helped earn my bread and butter, I decided to replace the parts and get an upgrade as well. So I ordered a new motherboard, faster chip, and memory. After putting it all together, the computer was still dead. I decided again it had to be the powersupply after all. So I took the original power supply and the new one I had on the shelf to compUSA and they tested them both for free. Turns out they were both dead as a doornail and I had been ripped off 2 years ealier. So I bought a new one from CompUSA, plugged it in and everything worked.
The moral is don't assume its not dead, just because the damn thing is new. Cost me some money i didn't need to spend, but I did get a decent upgrade out of it.
Also don't be afraid to get a powerful power supply. The one I bought from compusa was a 500 watt and spent about $100 for it. I wonder if I burned out the other one buy putting too much load on it.
Oh and both powersupplies (the supposedly new one one that was DOA, and the one that died after a year of use) both came from Tiger Direct. I haven't shopped there since.
