The USA should have clandestinly funded an anti-Sadam insurgency and allowed the Iraqi's to fight it out amoungst themselves.
Sure more people would have died...But the US superpower would have appeared to have been essentially a "non-aggressor" while allowing the Iraqi factions to do their own problem solving.
The Oil shortages that might have resulted could have been delt with in the marketplace...The rich (ie the USA) would have gotten richer as a result.
Instead the US is poorer. The oil problems are more or less there anyway. And the USA is now viewed as a militaristic thug.
We should learn from the Iraqi mistake, and start funding insurgencies in Iran and Syria so that the resulting chaos can prevent them from building an effective nuclear program.
Let the oil chips fall where they may: The marketplace will be forced to develop alternatives to "Cheap oil" which really isn't a bad thing.
North Korea deserves other hardball tactics: Allow the starvation to continue and let the Chinese fix the situation by removing the Tin Pot dictator.
