And look at the Cold War. A stand-off. There was no need to pull the trigger because everyone was afraid to.
When one's world-view is win-lose, black-or-white, all-or-none, every loss is perceived as a total loss. Every slight is an insult to one's entire way of life. Jingos and jingoism are examples of this.
As people mature they can usually shift into a world-view which regards life as a series of situations, factors in cause and effect, and comes to regard other people as basically like themselves.
While some things remain competitive, not everything is. And even that is not what it seems.
If someone lies to me, they've hurt themselves far more than me. If they steal, they get something material at the cost of their soul. What a price.
Black and white thinking robs people of their souls, their hearts, and distorts the reality of the world in ways they can't understand. Because what I'm describing is only visible looking back. People who haven't been there can't imagine it.
One can be vulnerable without being weak. And one can't be strong without being vulnerable.
