I'm not being facetious, but I do want to hear it.

I missed it. I know you feel that way, but I still don't understand what exactly it is you think caused this change. "Where it originated and from who". Is it a deliberate manipulation, a complex result of interacting social forces, or what?

As you and I have discussed before, I do agree to a certain extent that there is a growing skepticism in American self-perception, that it is no longer as consistently self-laudatory as it was in, say, the 50s. I do not agree it is as powerful or influential a force as you do, and don't think it is a negative development at all. I also disagree when it started. I first noticed it late in the Vietnam era. There were critics before, true, but critics in the mainstream (as opposed to small groups of activists) began, I believe, with the publication of the Pentagon Papers. By the time of Watergate, it became an established phenomenon.

I'm really not trying to pull your chain on this, I'm curious as to how and when you think it started.
