Truman left office with a popularity rating of 22 percent in 1952, an all-time record low for an active president. Due to a loophole in the 22nd Amendment, he was eligible for a third term, but decided not to run again after primary losses.
Many of his PR problems were due to the Korean War, which even as recently as the "MASH" TV series, has been painted in many corners (not mine) as another futile military effort on the part of the U.S.
This time was also the beginning of McCarthyism, the loyalty programs, and a series of IRS scandals in the administration.
Amazing how the passage of time blurs these things, but I guess for a lot of people, the world began in 2000.
Incidentally, I stand with you in the assessment that the Korean War was not a failure, or a loss, but prevented the entire Korean peninsula from becoming the hellhole North Korea is today.
