re: Although...

I read a blog today that was talking about the dynamic going on inside Iran today. Seems their president (and I don't have the spelling in front of me right now) is somewhat on the outs with not only a vast number of the people but also some of the conservative religious leaders since he's bringing down the wrath of the US and the world onto their country. Problem is that there's this point where the pressure starts having the opposite effect when the populace starts deducing that American action is inevitable and tends then to want to rally behind a blusterous leader.

As we saw in our own country, when attacked or in danger, our own citizens tend to rally around their current leader despite some very obvious flaws. I don't think it's far fetched for the Iranian people to see our military moves in the region as a threat no matter what our intentions. The rhetoric against Iranian involvement in Iraq has ramped up considerably. The bad-mouthing of the nuclear enrichment program has gone up as well. An additional carrier group has steamed into the Gulf (or is currently on the way). Israel's been conducting exercises that give the impression of an attack.

I have no idea what the administration's intentions are in Iran but the people there must be scared crapless of the possibilities. Animals are most dangerous when cornered. I'd say we're now at that phase where we're helping the Iranian president stay in office. Maybe that's the intent. With him gone there's no bogeyman to shake a stick at.
