The key to a patent--and you need to talk to a patent attorney to get the real info--is to use something in a way that nobody has used it before. Whether the components are off-the-shelf means nothing. The key is to apply them in a new and unique way.
The other thing to do is a patent search. Way too often, somebody has already patented something, just never went anywhere with it.
