re: Explanations

I have readily conceded that the political leanings in engineering and non-liberal-arts fields is more balanced, and this lines up with my personal experience. A university could claim to be "balanced" in that its schools of engineering lean differently than its schools of social science or education.

But go over the list you made of categories and vocations that I have called leftist in the past. How many of the people in those categories typically went to engineering schools? Or business schools?

When the engineers get out into the world, they are often uninterested in politics or activism. Bill Gates was almost completely apolitical until he was hauled before the Star Chamber to justify his right to exist.

Of course the country leaned further right in the 1960s. I've never said otherwise. But somehow, I see JFK as a lot closer to being where I think this country ought to be than how his brother sees it. And I also remember war movies where the U.S. was the good guy. How quaint.

Things are better now in a lot of ways since then, but I never believed we had to accept collectivism to, for example, give blacks equal rights.
