You can probably place one major turnaround in journalism at Woodward and Bernstein.

I wouldn't mind seeing surveys of academia over the past forty years...be interesting if the crop of leftist journalists was related to the leftward turn of the journalism schools.

Democrats have gotten a better deal from the media for a long time. Clinton's problems with Monica and such are always raised as a counterexample, but most people seem to forget that the mainstream media was hauled kicking and screaming into that story by the alternative media. Same for the Swift Boat issue, and then they only covered it to attack the Swift Boat Veterans.

One wonders how things would have turned out in Clinton's second term if there had been no Drudge, Fox News, or Rush Limbaugh. I suspect Clinton would never have come under suspicion, and Monica would be in a rubber room somewhere.

One small nitpick: Where does everyone get the idea that Reagan was an idiot? Other than the article of faith that all Republicans are idiots and all Democrats are paragons of intellect, something I have never seen objective evidence for.
