In an audio portion of this morning's NPR coverage suggests that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, anticipating a trial after which he will be executed, is pumping up al Qaeda's status as well as his own by making this statement at this time, when he was fairly sure there would be publicity. He has nothing to lose, so why not?
