The very fact you felt it necessary to even answer my throw-away post suggests the Clinton Legacy haunts you a lot more than it does me.
First, Clinton did not lose a major election, he retired victorious, he survived not only Monica, Whitewater, and Ken Starr but lame duckhood as well. He has indeed left the stage forever, he is constitutionally inelegible to run for President again and it would prove nothing for him to run for Senator or Governor, although you know he could win in a heartbeat, and there is historical precedent for such an action. He doesn't have to prove anything to anybody, and the only activities of any consequence he is involved in are his charity work with the Elder Bush, his Library, and the occasional stump speech. Successful politicians are often asked to campaign for candidates from their party.
It's been six years since he left the White house, an eternity in politics, and the Right is still bashing him. Don't you guys realize how you are making yourselves look? The more you squeal the better the Clinton years appear in retrospect. I could understand Republican whining about him as a way of countering Hillary, but the attacks against him long precede any threat to you from her. Not even Nixon got this much free publicity from his enemies. Trust me, you no longer have anything to fear from Slick Willy, so why continue demonizing him?
Perhaps there is a little history rewriting on the other side, at least that's how it appears to me, and I don't particularly consider myself a totally inept or seduced political observer; although I will gladly admit to being rather partisan so I don't expect anyone to take my word for it. What remains is the inevitable comparison--and the contrast. If you have any doubts, just visualize our last two presidents in debate with each other, or our current Chief Executive sitting across the table from someone like Putin.
As for Democrats feeling different now than they did then, I'm amazed you'd dare bring that up the way Republicans are abandoning Bush now. That's what politicians do.
Bill Clinton may yet sleep in the White House again. Maybe alone, then again, maybe not.
