Given the current situation around the world we can see that it is more than just Iran and Argentina, but rather the entire 3rd world is rising up against the west.
In the internet age, an age brought about by America, parts of the 3rd world see what their missing - something they didn't before. Before tv news was carefully screened by 3rd world governments to minimize the disparity or face more revolts and revolutions from folks who realized it was their current government that held them back.
Now folks can tour the world on the web and see how others live and even if they don't agree with their politics, they still are envious of the material trappings and daily conveniences which for them are luxuries and unavailable to all but the very rich within their respective nations.
This is the sort of general revolutionary mindset and western antipathy that existed when Nixon went to South America in 58, then encouraged by communists, but today is much more broad-based and apolitical.
The reality is this: the west needs to rearm and fast. The USA can't hold off the entire world and there are BILLIONS of folks who would love to claim Europe and North America as their own and remold it to accomodate their religious or political beliefs.
The best and brightest think tanks are, even as we speak, calculating the shifts in population, the best techniques for reprogramming the indoctrinated masses in other parts of the world, and yes coming up with advanced weaponry that proactively advances us to a level of technology that is another leap beyond the nuclear age.
As the 3rd world goes nuclear (expect Iran to have the bomb by 2010, Brazil to have the bomb by 2015 and Saudi Arabia around the same time) the logistics change drastically. These few nations will trigger a whole new 21st century nuclear arms race in the 3rd world and the west will be even more vulnerable.
That is why the best and brightest are so determined to hold the line while we can, because it becomes exponentially harder when the line is crossed. The nuclear genie is out of the bottle and the west will be the targets. Paris, Brussels, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Dublin, Madrid, Rome, Stockholm, Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver...etcetera will all be high-risk zones.
In the fifties in the US, the suburban movement and the freeway system were conceived as a way to spread the population and evacuate the cities so as to have the highest survival numbers after a nuclear attack. Unfortunately with terror weapons you have little warning and no time to evacuate. So we can expect security to rise massively over the next decade, making the post 2001 security measures seem insignificant. There will be a defacto police state in much of the world and this will be something future generations will simply get used to. ANY new successful major terror attack will make many of the think tank folks security plans be implemented almost at once.
At the same time many 3rd world leaders understand this - if they strike at the west with terror before they have nuclear arms, they understand it will be all over for them as western sympathy and reluctance to retaliate with devastating force, already waning, will be zip. So instead of creating a bunch of 9/11s throughout the west, they seek the bomb. The bomb comes first and then they feel confident they can blackmail the west and make their terror moves with a measure of impunity.
The west must maintain a whole dimension of technological edge above the 3rd world and when the nuclear level is breached, the west must have post-nuclear technological options, engineered to incapacitate without killing, immobilize nations without fallout.
The message has been made increasingly clear over the past few weeks and soon the western response will be equally clear.
