Weightism is a big problem

Excuse the pun. In our society overweight people are treated extremely harshly. They are often faced with rudeness, contempt, job discrimination and a host of other negative social repercussions that most of us would sharply condemn were it based on race, religion, gender, orientation, etc.

Bowser's comments are commonplace. Euthanasia? I was walking to my car a few months ago and as I passed a bus stop there was a woman there who probably weighed 300+ and was about 5'4". A 20 something guy walked up to her and said "Why are you so disgustingly fat? Why don't you just kill yourself?" He went on with a few more lines like that and the woman started to cry. I walked over to the punk and told him to fuck off and leave her alone and that he was an asshole etc etc. I then told the woman she shouldn't pay any attention to worthless, heartless losers like that guy. She thanked me but was obviously still deeply hurt.

We don't have to like the way people look but there is no excuse for mean and rude behavior, or prejudice. I know a couple people who have had bariatric surgery and have lost 150+ pounds. There are medical solutions but there are dangers to them as well. People who suffer from obesity need to balance the health issues. In the mean time, let's all try to have a little more kindness. Everyone has feelings.
