I had similar thoughts...
First, since we're recalling where we were and what we were doing at the time, I'll fill in that blank: I was asleep, having worked a late shift the night before and not due back until that evening. A neighbor knocked on my door around 10 am Eastern to tell me, so I only saw the tragedy in replay, on that neighbor's TV, over and over and over...
A couple of years before, I'd done a lot of traveling up and down the East Coast, including a day trip from Philly to Boston and back. The return flight path took us west to Albany, then south along the Hudson with Manhattan out the port-side windows. The day I went that way was as bright and clear as 11 Sept 01, and I realized that all the hijackers needed to know was how to steer: they didn't need instruments to navigate. Probably why it was that day...
Now that I think of it, the plane that went down in Pennsylvania was likely headed toward the Potomac, to follow it in without instruments.
