Masses, loads of BS. Smother 'em in it.
In reality I carry a small canister of pepper spray for things in general. I'm only afraid of people, really.
If I'm around people and have to stay near them I usually allude to friends who are coming along at any time, maybe sooner, maybe later. I believe the dog, who is very friendly, is a deterent, also. Two unknown quantities any badguys would have to reckon into their plans. Unless they're drunk, in which case I wouldn't have enought contact with them to get into an altercation, or they've decided early on to go all out against me, including killing the dog.
And one of the advantages of travelling the way I do is that I can stay anyplace I'd like. I even carry a lightweight hammock, in which I love to relax anyway, that allows me to stay in otherwise inhospitable places. It's neat. Not a great nights sleep, but is possible.
One of my enduring thoughts is that anyone against whom I'd use a weapon would incapacitate me by surprise anyway. Then they'd find it and they'd be armed. I've thought about that a lot, but the odds of needing one in the lower 48 are very, very slim. I'd rather run and enjoy the rest of the day.
