First of all, the premise that we don't have the technology is flat out wrong. Humans could reduce their environmental footprint by 95% with existing technology if we simply had the political will. Second, the idea that democracies won't change their ways is wrong as well but obviously it takes imposing a carbon tax to tweak the market into moving in the direction we must go. The author actually makes these types of suggestions after saying there is no hope. Third, to assume other countries will continue to pollute while we cut back, negating any gains we make, is not a given as the author suggests and is really a pretty stupid argument. "Let's stop fighting terrorists because other countries will continue to produce terrorists."
