The reason politics enters every discussion is because someone deliberately interjects it. If no political conflict is going on, someone makes it a point to start one. Most brawls begin here not as a result of a debate on automobile design or climate theory, they start with a straightforward statement meant to insult and provoke and take over. Look for yourself, how many exchanges start in the middle of a thread? They start with a bomb layed at the start of it. It's a provocation designed to insult and humiliate and monopolize the conversation and turn it into the kind of one-issue obsession you mention.
The rhetoric that follows has little to do with facts, or even opinion. It relies on personal attack, smugness, sneers, one-upmanship, and sarcasm. That's why good posters cut back or leave. They get tired of the whining and the lack of common courtesy.
Personally, I don't really care if the government wants to take over everything, I don't even care if the greed of private enterprise is infinite. And I care even less what other people think about it. At least, I don't care about it continuously.
What I do care about is people who insist on rubbing my nose in it. This is why I resist, not because I'm trying to bring about political change, or counter anyone else's, but to show the bullies and Brownshirts that they can't get away with it. This insistence on steering the conversation to the same tired points, over and over again, doesn't look to me like an attempt to warn anyone about political evil, what it really sounds like is a plan to desensitize
the audience from objecting to it.
Politics doesn't creep into discussions here. It's hammered in by scared, desperate people who seem to have lost the capacity to think about anything else.
That is the definition of obsession, isn't it?
