Simple answer

Once upon a time, people were self-reliant, made their own way in the world, were pretty much in control of their own destinies other than for acts of God. Today the average person is pretty much powerless and knows it. He or she is at the mercy of Corporate America from the drugs we take to the food we eat to the way we heat and cool our homes. Then Corporate America outsources our jobs. Being powerless, the average person is willing to give over to the Government what little power they have left because they have to trust in something, anything, to make life bearable, livable. Joe Schmoe or Jane Crow can do nothing on his/her own. Once upon a time being little only meant there was no one to notice you or take advantage of you. Now it means they don't give a shit about you and will take everything from you if someone doesn't stop them. Government is the entity who can keep them at bay.

Except, what the little guy doesn't realize is that government till take from you what Corporate America hasn't, including your dignity.
