re: You noticed that.

Actually, my world view is not that different from yours. But what I find most frightening is the exercise of power in private hands, with no control or supervision except some nebulous concept of "the free market" which supposedly restricts and channels private power as severely and completely as it does my own. I don't believe a word of it. Power is power, and when someone sells you everything you need, and working for them is the only way to get the cash to buy it, then they have infinite power over you, no matter how benign they might be.

Human beings have a responsibility to cooperate and contribute to the organization of their society, but they also have the right to have some say in how that society is organized and functions. We allow the private sector to operate because it provides us with goods and services and employment, in return we support that private sector and see to it those who benefit from controlling it are rewarded well for their efforts and the risks they take. Yes, I said "we allow" ! The private sector is a public institution which the community has every right to modify, control, or eliminate. It also has the right to join and become part of it. The private sector is not the personal playground of entrepreneurs and professional administrators and the rest of us employees have to just settle for what it chooses to give us. And it should not be necessary to become part of some entrepreneurial oligarchy (or some managerial hierarchy) to benefit from it.

The private sector also operates to a great extent outside human control, it behaves, in many ways, like an independent entity with its own agenda, often against its own long-term interests. It does so not necessarily because the people who work in it or run it are evil, but because it exhibits organizational behavior independent of that of its component human parts. Governments do this too, as conservatives always love to point out, but they fail to see that the forms of "private" organization they favor are exactly the same. I cannot trust a private sector undisciplined by anything but a free market any more than I can trust a government to automatically respond to its laws and its constitution. Both require restraint and monitoring, and an occasional ass-kicking.
