My student union was the coffee shop, the latter was the biggest and mostly commonly used space there. And in those days, the obnoxious politicos were the lefty/liberals, with their constant petitions and speeches, their phony outrage and their insistence on poking their noses into every activity and conversation, dissecting and then denigrating it as evidence of some fascist conspiracy. You couldn't get away from them, they were everywhere and they would not take no for an answer. If you disagreed with them they insulted you, if you agreed with them, it was never enough. If you ignored them they followed you around. They overwhelmed you with their self-righteousness and their virtue, and never failed to remind you how you had been co-opted and seduced by THE MAN and were collaborating in his depredations. They were always talking about academic freedom, but they never seemed to study, and no one had freedom to do anything except agree with them.
Isn't it wonderful how times have changed?
