"- - - he had no regrets about the mission and slept just fine at night."

And while the bombing was terrorism at its worst, a crime against humanity, there is no reason given the times why he shouldn't have slept well. He was NOT a war criminal, nor were others who acted with him.

And it one reads histories of the end of WW II, they realize it was not necessary to use these bombs. Japan was an island nation, its' people starving already, surrounded by mighty navies with unopposed and unsurpassed airpower massed against it.

Various historians with knowledge of the military and political/religious interplay at the time at the highest levels in Japan say that the A-bomb may have hastened their surrender by one to two weeks. The invasion with it's 1,000,000 Allied and 3,000,000 Japanese casualties was not going to be necessary no matter what.

In fact, the surrender had been slowed already by the insistence upon "unconditional surrender". The Japanese thought, correctly, that it meant the elimination of the Emperor and as a religious principle wouldn't stand for it. As it was, even with the A-bomb, the Emperor was allowed to keep his throne. Had the Japanese known that would happen it would have been over much earlier.

For one history, read "The Rising Sun", by John Tolland. There are many.

AND, it's impossible to blame people for using it.

Arf (Conservatives don't read history, Bow. That's obvious.)
