Flame » in reply to 30 states calling for a ban on refugees from Syria.

And so it begins

"I need a Leader. To lead."

Jody, think of all the people in history who've answered that plea. Can you name even one who didn't turn out to be a tyrant, and frequently a monster?

Jody, how did the 9/11 hijackers get to America? They didn't sneak across the border. They didn't parachute in the dead of night. They bought tickets on routine commercial air flights.

Nor did they have to smuggle in weapons to use. Irony is often a bright light on human stupidity, and the biggest irony yesterday was the Texas legislator who didn't want Syrian refugees in Texas because it's so easy to buy guns in Texas. Savor the irony of that for a moment. Savor the stupidity.

Each Syrian refugee will have to run a two-year gauntlet of background checks and investigation. How long is the background check for a gun in Texas? What background check? Exactly. Perhaps your perspective is just a bit skewed?

There are estimated to be a couple of million people fleeing Daesh (the preferred new term for "ISIS" that doesn't do it the favor of inflating it into the status of a country). A couple of million people fleeing our enemies. You know there will be terrible consequences for turning them away (the 10,000 out of the 2 million that we've offered to take. Generous us). It'll be a fantastic propaganda coup for Daesh, reinforcing their claim that America is waging war on their religion, that we hate Muslims not just as a few individuals like you, Jody, but as an entire society. We play into their hands every time a demagogue politician successfully plays on fear and bigotry, reinforcing their propaganda; and every time we restrict our own freedoms in a fearful quest for security we reveal our lack of faith in our own principles.

This is the desired result of terrorism. They win when we feel the terror. Too many people right now are playing right into the hands of Daesh.
