An obvious first step....

Is to go nuclear- and yes, you and Tom delight in saying that a large number of radical environmentalists oppose this. It will require political will to do this as well as public education, but it CAN be done.

Secondly, there should be financial incentives offered to those people or corporations that decide to use renewable energy- I am not suggesting handouts, I am talking about an investment. Tax credits for those moving to solar power can legitimately be considered an investment in our nation's security. Allow individuals to sell excess power they generate via renewable means. Some states already are doing this.

Germany took actions along these lines with results that exceeded expectations. They did pay more in the short term, but they are well positioned for the long term because of that investment.

Working at increasing energy efficiency can likewise be viewed as a financial and security investment.

More and more companies are actually coming to the realization that going green can be a profitable thing to do.

The MOST critical thing we must do is to work on ways to get the growing economies of china and india to go to nuclear power, instead of coal.

I have never argued for dramatically reducing our standard of living, but the longer we wait the more painful the consequences will be. There is NO question that action will have to be taken at some point, the only question is how bad will the crisis will get before we finally act.
