This position should not be a surprise. Although NASA's manned spaceflight programs are notoriously inefficient and costly, they do symbolize the endeavor to explore. Obama's populist position will appeal to the party innumerate who mistakenly believe that NASA's budget is a huge part of the federal budget. Interesting that in all the federal largesse, NASA's inefficiency somehow stands out above all others, including the record billions $ allocated to earmarks for pet congressional district projects.
Quite a contrast to 90s 'science' VP Al Gore's 'Goresat' and the crewed reuseable SSTO X-33 boondoggle which saw over $1B spent on a hangar queen before cancellation.
This is such a moot point given that Obama has no chance to become POTUS, unless a meteor destroys all the other candidates except John Edwards.
