I guess it had to happen: McCain Derangment Syndrome.
Probably the best way to evaluate the situation is, when an individual Republican says that "I and lots of other Republicans will boycott McCain", to throw out the "lots of other Republicans" and just count that as one individual. As Simon mentions at the end, the "need to be right" often leads people to project their attitude on large numbers of other people, in order to have the assurance of being part of a crowd.
The comments are interesting, too. I liked the Reagan quote: "Do you want 50% of what you want or 100% of nothing?" A skim of the comments turned up perhaps half a dozen MDS sufferers, but for the most part the sentiment was powered by Hillary Derangement Syndrome: The phrase "hold my nose and vote for McCain" was repeated like a mantra.
In other words, Republicans will vote on the basis of the lesser hatred.
