The two tend to feed off each other, causing a feedback that contributes to the problem spiralling out of control.

Encourages people to arm themselves for their own protection...
Which increases the number of guns and the opportunity to acquire them...
Which makes guns cheaper and easier to get or steal...
An unexpected consequence of this is that gun laws are complex and inconsistent, applied haphazardly, enforced erratically and ineffectively because of the politicization of the problem, regional differences, and because (of course), criminals don't care whether they're illegal or not.
A start, although certainly not a cure-all, to the problem is to make all weapons not justifiable as sporting or home-defense weapons illegal, to ban their production, sale and ownership. Eventually, through confiscation, their numbers will drop to tolerable levels without undue hardship on legitimate users.
Sure, there may be a lot of gray areas and honest category disputes, but nobody needs an AK-47, or for that matter, ammunition specifically designed to penetrate police armor or defeat the surgeon's skill. As it is now, the gun lobby resists any attempt at regulation, no matter how reasonable, and the anti-gun lobby promotes any legislation that interferes with and annoys legitimate firearms applications, no matter how ridiculous.
