Let's look at the modern answer of the pain associated with BIRTH.
Not only the pain of delivery but the pain associated with long labor.
We have ameliorated it with spinal blocks and anaesthetics.

So, why not the assisted pain relief of death, witch is nothing more than the "departure' from Life? Seems like a natural progression to me.
