We had them from differing parties on occasion, like happens in State legislatures where the Governor and Lt. Gov. are frequently from different parties.
I think we have outgrown the system our forefathers set up for us. We need to kill the electoral college (the setup, not the people - well, sometimes the people!) and do this by popular vote. Period. And the nomination should be handled the same way. Whoever thought up the caucus system didn't take into account (or maybe they did--intentionally) that a lot of older people can't get out to those easily. A lot of handicapped or semi-handicapped people are basically disenfranchised by the caucus. And what's with Texas, having a vote and then a caucus but you can only caucus if you've already voted? Jeez, that's voting twice! It's supposed to be one man (or woman), one vote. But no, Texas has to double enfranchise those who CAN do both. So it's all front-loaded for Obama. I cry FOUL!
