Isn't it interesting that right before the Moscow Olympics Russia invaded Afghanistan and now China's flexing its muscle in Tibet. Could it not be that these countries, fearing the influx of visitors from huge democracies and the real security challenges and information leaks giant events create, are actually counting on the outrage to lessen that impact?
I always said that Jimmy Carter made a major boneheaded move by boycotting Moscow. Instead he should have given free travel or subsidies to any American wanting to go to Russia and be part of the festivities with the caveat that they spread themselves throughout the countryside and interacting with as many Russian citizens as they could. The KGB would have had a coronary.
The biggest threat to communist countries is the influx of outside ideas into its citizenry. Why don't we use the Olympics for that? The time for outrage is not just every 4 years.
