...which may sound ironic, but seriously, we're talking about an attack ad, and what makes it an attack isn't just what it says or doesn't say, but how it says it. The voice dripping with venom spitting out "Liberal" in the same tones a normal person might use with "pedophile", or a "good German" have used to say "Jew", is one solid indicator. Another is the use of bigoted codewords like "San Francisco values" that evoke homophobia. Or how about that soundtrack that would sound sleazy in a porn flick?
One thing I've observed about smears is that whether or not a person perceives it as a smear depends on whether they notice the coded parts of the message--a person receptive to the smear hears "simple truths", while others raise a perceptual red flag about obvious distortion and bigotry.
And yes, a position against same-sex marriage does equate to "blanket condemnation (hatred)" of homosexuals. C'mon, for gawd's sake, why else would anyone get a burr under their saddle on the subject? Are you going to try the "hate the sin, not the sinner" line next? Or "it's only about defending marriage"...against what?
"Does a pro-life stance make you a hater?" Do I have to remind you that a pro-life "stance" has been the motivation for cold-blooded murder on numerous occasions?
