First, its not free college for everybody, just for people who can make the entrance requirements and maintain their grades.
Second, like socialized medicine, most civilized countries already have this, and have had it for decades. Germany provides free university training for everybody, even foreign students! There is nothing new about this idea. Remember my story about my grandfather? That was 1910, and Cuba had just fought a bloody war of independence against Spain. Bernie didn't invent this idea any more than Barack invented socialized medicine.
And Third, all college in the USA is government-subsidized, and has been subsidized for about a century. There is no one alive today who has actually paid for his own education, because the price per student far exceeds the tuition he or she paid. In other words, we already have this, only we have rigged it so its a lot easier for well-off people to take advantage of it than the poor. In fact, the richer you are, the more you can game the system. The rich can collect their tax subsidy because they can afford to get into Harvard, I had to settle for a small, southern liberal arts college.
You have every right to be proud of how hard you worked to pay for your education. But no matter how much you paid, the taxpayer payed more. Your tuition didn't pay for ALL your education, it didn't even come close. MY tax dollars made up the difference. And if you have kids in college, my tax dollars are paying for a piece of their education too.
The difference is I don't mind paying, its part of the price I'm willing to pay for living in a civilized country.
