The glee evidenced in the thread below is unseemly, to put it mildly, and reflects badly on the Zone and on the Democratic side. Not to mention that in terms of political strategy, it's foolish.
Superficial schadenfreude tends to blind people; they get distracted by the juicy tidbit and stop thinking further. Me, when I see smart political operatives make what looks like an incredibly stupid move, I ask myself whether they might be playing a deeper game.
Among the possibilities is simply that Republicans are hoping that Democrats will make asses of themselves with snide comments about Wasilla the muddy trailer park...elitism, check; ...rifles and moosehunting = anti-guns, anti-Red state hobbies...check; and now the glee over the mistake of a teenage girl...general cruelty and political opportunism, check. The thread below shows an unfortunate number of dumbasses playing right into Republican hands.
Or it could be deeper still. What if they've realized that McCain will suffer an ignominious defeat in November, damaging the GOP; and the Palin Strategy consists of setting up a scapegoat to explain the loss as other than the intrinsic failure of McCain and Republicanism? "Damn that woman, she concealed skeletons in her closet, it's all her fault. If it weren't for Sarah Palin, we'd have won in a landslide!".
This all illustrates, once again, that the high road is also the safer road. There are landmines on the low road, placed there by those who call the low road home. I fear a lot of Democrats may step on Republican landmines with the name "Sarah Palin" on them.
