I've been right there, watching it unfold.

It's precisely in the last 40 years that conservativism turned ugly, and I was there, where and when it happened, remember? And I was old enough to see what what was happening, from John Birch to Dick Cheney, an unbroken progression of evil. I saw the party of small businessmen, honest craftsmen and decent, middle class people taken over by racists, fearmongers, fascists, jingoistic superpatriot phonies and religious fanatics.

No, there's nothing wrong with conservatism, it's just the other side of the coin of political views and it serves as a valid counterweight and correction to extreme liberalism and vice versa. But what we have now is way beyond that. It started as a reaction to the Civil Rights movement, fed on (and cynically exploited) an irrational fear of socialism, enlisted the medieval and tribal forces of Neanderthal religion, and has now evolved into a program with one goal only, it's original and fundamental reason for existence: keep taxes low, wages cheap, and to hell with anyone who gets crushed by the program.

Palin's just a pretty face.
