Whatever Bush and McCain are, especially McCain, they are not conservatives in the style of Reagan, Gingrich, or even Palin. Maybe compared to someone like Ted Kennedy, Bush "governed from the right." No, wait. He wrote legislation with Ted Kennedy.
I know why Palin was a target for furious and nearly-insane opposition from the Left, and it's probably not for the reasons you think.
The most electoral success the Republicans ever had was when they ran as consistent and principled conservatives, and there are a lot of liberal politicians who really don't want people to remember that. God knows the Republican Party seems to have forgotten it.
